Ontario International Airport (ONT) is expanding its service to Mexico, offering travelers new flight options as part of the airport’s continued growth in Southern California. The airport has recorded 50 consecutive months of passenger growth through April 2025, cementing its role as an increasingly important gateway for Mexican destinations.
New Mexico Routes and Expanded Services
Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris is significantly expanding its ONT footprint with new flights to three destinations in Mexico, including increased service to the popular beach resort Los Cabos (SJD). These additions come as part of a broader expansion that includes new routes to Taiwan and major U.S. cities.
The expansion reflects growing confidence from airlines in ONT’s market position, with carriers boosting seat capacity by eight percent in April alone according to airport officials.
Airport Traffic Continues to Grow
The airport welcomed 575,623 passengers in April 2025, marking a 0.4% increase from the same month last year. International visitors grew by 0.6% to 36,556 passengers, despite an overall slight dip in international traffic for the year to date.
During the first four months of 2025, Ontario International served over 2 million travelers, up 0.5% from the same period in 2024. This consistent growth pattern makes ONT an increasingly viable alternative for travelers seeking connections to Mexico from Southern California.
Strategic Location Benefits Mexico-Bound Travelers
Located just 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, Ontario International Airport offers Mexico-bound travelers from the Inland Empire and broader Southern California region a more convenient alternative to larger, more congested airports in the area.
The airport’s market share is led by Southwest Airlines (38.6%), followed by American Airlines (15.8%), Frontier Airlines (11.1%), Delta Air Lines (10.1%), and United Airlines (8.5%).
Supporting Tourism Infrastructure
Beyond passenger services, ONT’s cargo operations have shown significant growth, with April air cargo tonnage jumping 16.6% year-over-year. This robust logistics infrastructure helps support the tourism supply chain for both domestic and international destinations, including Mexico.
For travelers heading to Mexico, the expanded routes and growing services at Ontario International Airport offer more options and potentially easier travel experiences compared to other Southern California departure points.
