Mexico’s Tourism Ministry organized a comprehensive tour of the Maya Train for over 60 international ambassadors last weekend. This initiative aimed to showcase the passenger rail service that connects five states across southeastern Mexico.

Tour Details

The diplomatic delegation, led by Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, traveled the complete 1,500-kilometer circuit. This route links Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo through 34 stations. It serves 21 municipalities and provides access to more than 40 archaeological sites.

During the trip, ambassadors were provided with detailed information about the train’s operations and Mexico’s tourism promotion strategies. The goal was to encourage them to promote the service in their home countries.

Significance of the Maya Train

“The Maya Train takes new steps toward consolidating itself as an act of historic justice for the Mayan Indigenous Peoples and tourism integration for the communities of southeastern Mexico,” Rodríguez Zamora explained to the diplomatic corps.

The Tourism Secretary highlighted the train’s growing popularity, noting it has transported more than 1.1 million passengers since its December 2023 launch. Additionally, April 2025 ticket sales increased by 171 percent compared to the same month last year.

Additional Activities

The international delegation also visited museums along the route. They learned about the network of services supporting the train, including seven hotels managed by the Olmeca-Maya-Mexica Airport, Railway, and Auxiliary and Related Services Group.

The Maya Train represents a significant infrastructure investment, connecting previously underserved regions of Mexico. It provides travelers with access to cultural and archaeological destinations throughout the Yucatán Peninsula.
