A new 10-part docuseries highlighting one of Mexico’s oldest soccer clubs will debut in early August, bringing the rich history of Club Necaxa to screens across Mexico and the United States.
The series, titled simply “Necaxa,” is produced by Hollywood actress Eva Longoria, who is also a co-owner of the club. Longoria, who has Mexican heritage, partnered with fellow Necaxa co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac (formerly Rob McElhenney) to create the documentary.
The production traces the century-long journey of Club Necaxa, from its founding in 1922 by Scottish businessman William H. Frasser to its current incarnation as the Rayos del Necaxa in Aguascalientes. Originally based in Mexico City, the team was formed by employees of Frasser’s electricity company, earning them the nickname “electricistas” (electricians).
The docuseries will explore the club’s historical significance in Mexican culture, its competitive ups and downs, and recent efforts to restore its former glory in Liga MX. Viewers will get an inside look at training sessions, player injuries, and administrative decisions that shape the team’s fortunes.
Release Schedule
- The first episodes will be available on Hulu in the United States beginning August 7.
- Mexican audiences gain access via Disney Plus on August 8.
- The release schedule will feature two episodes weekly for the first three weeks.
- One episode each Friday until the finale on September 19.
Club Necaxa was among the founding members of what eventually became Mexico’s professional soccer league, the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol, and maintains a devoted fan base despite facing numerous challenges in recent years.
