President Claudia Sheinbaum has firmly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent assertions that Mexican officials are “petrified” of drug cartels and highlighted Mexico’s progress in combating narcotics trafficking.
During a bill-signing ceremony on Wednesday for his Halt All Lethal Trafficking of Fentanyl Act, Trump claimed that Mexican authorities are afraid to show up for work due to cartels having “very strong control over Mexico.”
In response, Sheinbaum described Trump’s comments as “imprecise” and emphasized that her administration has “taken firm action against the cartels,” preventing organized crime from infiltrating security institutions.
The Mexican president cited concrete evidence of progress, noting a 50% reduction in fentanyl trafficking along Mexico’s northern border, a statistic she said has been corroborated by U.S. customs officials.
This latest exchange follows Trump’s announcement on Saturday of 30% tariffs on Mexican imports effective August 1, based on claims that Mexico isn’t doing enough to prevent the region from becoming a “Narco-Trafficking Playground.”
Sheinbaum has directed Mexico’s Foreign Affairs and Security ministries to prepare a comprehensive report detailing the country’s anti-drug trafficking efforts and chemical precursor regulations to be sent to U.S. government officials and congressional members.
The Mexican president has also called for greater U.S. accountability in addressing the fentanyl crisis, including recognizing domestic addiction issues and controlling the flow of weapons into Mexico. She stated that “as long as they fail to recognize that they have a serious public health problem, this will never be solved.”
