Mexican cycling sensation Isaac del Toro has claimed victory at the 74th Tour of Austria, adding another impressive achievement to his rapidly growing list of accolades. The 21-year-old Baja California native dominated the competition, winning three of the five stages and finishing with an overall time of 17 hours, 51 minutes, and 18 seconds.
Del Toro completed the 714.2-kilometer race with a commanding 29-second lead over Ireland’s Archie Ryan, while his UAE Emirates teammate Rafael Majka took third place, 47 seconds behind the winner. The victory earned Del Toro 7,650 euros (US $8,930) in prize money.
This win follows Del Toro’s remarkable performance at the Giro d’Italia earlier this year, where he finished second overall and wore the race leader’s pink jersey from Stage 9 through Stage 19. As the youngest rider to finish on the podium since 1940, he also claimed the white jersey awarded to the top young rider under 25.
The Baja California cyclist’s hat trick of stage wins at the Tour of Austria has helped his UAE Emirates team extend their dominance this season with 61 stage wins, nearly double the 33 victories of second-placed Lidl-Trek.
Cycling News has labeled Del Toro a “rising star” after his powerful performance in Stage 4’s challenging Alpine climb from Innsbruck to Kühtai, which featured elevation gains equivalent to 3,500 meters.
Del Toro, who only made his professional debut in January 2024, is under contract with UAE Emirates through 2029. His Tour of Austria triumph, combined with his Milano-Torino victory in March, continues to establish him as one of Mexico’s most promising international sports stars.
