Mexico is taking a firm stance against tariffs while advancing plans for a national artificial intelligence research center, as announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum during her Friday press conference.
The president expressed clear opposition to the 35% tariff that U.S. President Donald Trump plans to impose on Canadian imports starting August 1, as well as existing duties on Mexican exports. “Obviously, we don’t agree with the tariffs,” Sheinbaum stated.
A Mexican delegation led by Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard was in Washington to discuss a proposed “global agreement” that encompasses security, migration, and trade. Mexico is seeking exemptions or reductions to current U.S. tariffs affecting Mexican steel, aluminum, and vehicle exports.
Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s commitment to strengthening the USMCA trade agreement, which is scheduled for review in 2026. “The three countries being together strengthens us,” she said, advocating for the expansion of North American economic cooperation. Despite this, she maintains that her government’s priority is defending Mexican jobs and interests.
National AI Laboratory Initiative
In technology news, the president confirmed the development of a National Artificial Intelligence Laboratory as part of the government’s Plan México economic initiative. The facility will focus on education, technological development, open-source programs, and research in fields like seismology, meteorology, and medicine.
The laboratory is being developed under the leadership of José Antonio Peña Merino, head of the government’s Digital Transformation and Telecommunications Agency, and Rosaura Ruiz, federal minister for science, humanities, technology, and innovation. No launch date has been announced.
The press conference began with a cultural promotion for the Guelaguetza festival, currently taking place in Oaxaca, featuring musicians, dancers, and traditional mojiganga puppets.
