The Mexican government has announced the upcoming release of “Wellness Chocolate” (Chocolate de Bienestar) as part of its “Food for Well-Being” strategy. The product aims to provide Mexicans with nutritious and affordable chocolate options while supporting cacao farmers in Tabasco and Chiapas.

The government chocolate will be available in three different presentations:

  • A chocolate bar with 50% cacao content priced at 14 pesos
  • Powdered chocolate with 30% cacao for 38 pesos
  • Tablet chocolate with 35% cacao for 96 pesos

María Luisa Albores, head of Food for Well-Being, indicated that the initiative connects cacao farmers participating in the #SembrandoVida program directly with consumers across Mexico. The government emphasizes the health benefits of chocolate, including improved cardiovascular health through antioxidants, better cognitive function, and mood enhancement.

Despite its health-focused marketing, the packaging will include warning labels for excess sugar, calories, and saturated fats. The chocolate bar formula uses 50% cacao and 35% sugar, placing it in the “semi-dark” category with relatively low fat content.

Distribution of Wellness Chocolate will occur in phases over a three-month period, with the product eventually reaching all 25,000 Wellness Stores throughout Mexico. The initiative represents the government’s broader effort to make Mexican-made, healthy food options accessible while economically supporting historically disadvantaged southern regions.
