Coahuila state is establishing itself as a major force in Mexico’s wine industry, with local wineries earning over 1,500 awards and recognitions in both domestic and international competitions over the past decade.
The state’s burgeoning wine scene is anchored by Casa Madero, North America’s oldest winery, alongside a growing collection of boutique and established vineyards spread across the region’s diverse microclimates.
The Wines and Dinosaurs Route, named for the excellently preserved prehistoric fossils found throughout the area, currently features 11 participating wineries. Tourism officials plan to make this route more accessible to visitors in the near future.
Wine enthusiasts can experience Coahuila’s offerings at the upcoming La Gran Vendimia Festival Internacional del Vino y la Buena Vida on July 19 at the Rincón Montero Hotel in Parras de la Fuente.
Notable wineries in the region include:
- Casa Náufrago in Parras de las Fuentes, which spans 100 hectares with several exceptional microclimates for grape cultivation.
- Hacienda Florida in General Cépeda, known for its award-winning shiraz and grenache blend.
- Bodega Amonites, which prioritizes respect for the terroir and offers archaeological tours alongside wine tastings.
The Sierra del Arteaga mountain range, with elevations exceeding 2,000 meters, produces distinctive high-altitude wines known for their aromatic, fresh, and elegant characteristics. Wineries like Terra Serena, Bodegas Del Viento, and Los Pinos take advantage of the stunning mountain landscapes to enhance visitor experiences.
