Mexico’s automotive industry achieved a remarkable turnaround in June 2025, setting new production and export records despite ongoing trade tensions with the United States.
Automakers manufactured 361,047 vehicles last month, representing a 4.9% increase compared to June 2024, according to data from Mexico’s national statistics agency INEGI. This marks a significant recovery after five consecutive months of contraction in the sector.
The industry also exported 331,517 cars in June, a 14% jump from the same period last year, establishing another monthly record. The United States remains the primary destination for Mexican-made vehicles, receiving nearly 80% of total exports.
Production Milestones
For the first half of 2025, Mexico produced 2,006,720 vehicles, a 0.5% increase over the same period last year. This represents only the second time in history that Mexican production has exceeded two million units in a six-month period, with the previous occurrence in 2019, before the COVID pandemic.
Leading Automakers
General Motors led production with 436,106 vehicles manufactured during the first semester, followed by Nissan (341,530) and Ford (223,742). Toyota and KIA Motors showed the strongest growth:
- Toyota: 55% production increase
- KIA Motors: 15.5% production increase
Industry experts project Mexico will produce approximately four million vehicles by year-end, reinforcing the country’s position as a global automotive manufacturing hub.
Challenges Ahead
Despite these production gains, some challenges remain. Cumulative exports for the first half of 2025 are down 2.83% compared to last year, partly due to a 2.9% decrease in shipments to the United States. Domestic sales also declined by 5.9% in June compared to 2024.
